Words

Words you can use in your own sentences.

Collect words from what you read. Each one has 5 tiers, from picking its meaning to saying your own sentence with it.

Every word starts with you.

There are no set lists. A word enters your collection in one of 3 ways, and you pick the exact meaning you want to learn.

  • Look it up

Search a word you met while reading, then choose which of its meanings you mean.

  • Sort a few

Gradus offers words near your level. Mark each one as known, seen or worth learning.

  • Pick a theme

Start from a topic you need, 1 frequency band at a time, and take only the words you want.

The 5 tiers.

A tier isn't a difficulty setting. Each one asks for a different kind of knowing, and a word moves up only when it passes.

  1. Meet it

The answer is on screen. Find it.

Are the form and the meaning linked at all? A definition and 4 words, a word and 4 definitions, or a meaning and the sentence that carries it.

  2. Pin it down

Nothing is produced and nothing is given.

Where does the meaning start and stop? One definition is exact and 3 are close, or 3 sentences are offered and you mark each one.

  3. Own it

No options, and the word is nowhere on screen.

Can you call the word up from its meaning? It opens on a gapped sentence with a free letter mask, and ends on a meaning and an empty field.

  4. Write it

You write your own sentence with the word.

The prompt adds a constraint, often a word it goes with. A model grades the sentence and names what's wrong with it.

  5. Say it

You say your own sentence, in real time.

The same task, out loud. The microphone opens with the prompt and closes when you stop. The transcript can be sent or said again, never edited.

Each word keeps its own schedule.

A word comes back when you're close to forgetting it. Today only shows what's ready, so you never manage a queue.

A miss brings it back sooner
And it can move a word down a tier.
5 new words a day
The rest are waiting to start.
A word you keep missing is flagged
It is held back for 14 days, and later you decide whether to keep it.
The sentence you found it in
It is saved on the word's page.

Start with the words you half know.

Sort up to 30 words and Gradus sets the level your questions are written at.
